Shaan (1980)

Big B Dhamaka

This blockbuster that didn’t hit the bulls eye immediately after geting released, but a hit in the long run was directed by SHOLAY director Ramesh Sippy. G P Sippy and Ramesh Sippy made a movie that was unabashedly overinflated — big budget, big stars, big blasts.

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Parveen Babi, Rakhee, Shatrughan Sinha, Kulbhushan Kharbanda

However, the movie had not matched Sholay’s groundbreaking critical and commercial success. Shaan was an adventure story with state-of-the-art fight sequences, villains and sets. As for the script, Salim-Javed have used their imagination conjuring up novel fight situations for the characters — like dunking a man, car included, in water.

DSP Shiv Kumar (Sunil Dutt) is a diligent and honest police officer in Bombay, India. He lives with his wife Sheetal Kumar (Raakhee), a son, and two wayward brothers, Ravi (Shashi Kapoor), and Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan), who are con-men, and will anything for a quick buck. First, they outwit an unwitting dupe, then (in a questionable boost for female liberation) the heroines (Bindiya and Parveen Babi) outwit them. For extra fun, they all get together to outwit the general public. When Shiv Kumar is killed, his wife Sheetal Kumar (Raakhee) is left widowed, Ravi and Vijay give up their waywardness, and non-chalant way of life, to find out who killed their brother, and avenge his death. They discover with the help of former hitman Rakesh (Shatrughan Sinha) that the man who killed their brother was none other than the seemingly invincible Shakal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), a criminal mastermind.

His younger brothers now want Shakal’s bald scalp and they are aided by Rakesh (Shatrughan Sinha), a sharp shooter who has his own axe to grind with Shakaal and by Abdul (Mazhar Khan) a freewheeling informer who feeds them free information about Shakaal. It all leads to the final showdown on Shakaal’s island and inside his gadget-filled den of vice after the leads have disguised themselves. Many punch-ups later, Vijay knows exactly what buttons to press on Shakaal’s control panel to finish the villain’s tyranny.
