Chupke Chupke (1975) *Reloaded – On Demand*

A superb comedy by a superb director Late Hrishikesh Mukherjee performed by superb actors

Raghav brags that he can smell a rat or an impersonator automatically, and Dr. Parimal Tripathi decides to take him on – result: funny family slapstick comedy, with a dose of pure Hindi and Urdu thrown in, especially the dialogue delivery by Om Prakash, Dharmendra, and Amitabh Bachchan.

Cast: Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri, Om Prakash

Like all Hrishikesh Mukerjee films, this one boasts of a simple story. The Late Upendranath Ganguly has written a story that has the audience in splits. Gulzar’s screenplay is also well knit keeping everything in perfect consensus. Dialogues by Gulzar are the highlight of the movie, and those uttered by Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan and Om Prakash are frankly hilarious.

Performances in the movie are the backbone of the film. Each and every character has been so well etched out and the actors fit their characters like a glove. Dharmendra as Parimil Tripathi a.k.a. Pyaremohan Illahbadi is simply immaculate. His facial expressions, dialogue delivery, and body language all have the viewer in splits. It would be wrong to say that Dharmendra was an action hero since he proves here that he was just as good at comedy as he was at action. Sharmila Tagore acts gracefully and is a natural comedian. She shares superlative chemistry with Dharmendra. A simple yet effective performance from her. Similarly Jaya Bachchan as Vasudha makes her mark felt in the second half of the movie. Amitabh Bachchan as Suv Kumar Sinha is excellent in a supporting role. He livens up the entire second half with his presence. The scenes where he attempts to teach Jaya Botany or his scenes with Asrani are downright hilarious. Om Prakash as the lovable yet highly stressed out Jijaji is great too.

Hrishikesh Mukerjee is top notch in the director’s chair. His excellence is shown right throughout Bollywood he was truly the master of social entertainers. Chupke Chupke is no different. With a simple yet magical story, a tailor made cast with downright hilarious characters, witty dialogues, a lovable soundtrack and some extremely funny situations Hrishikesh Mukerjee delivers on all accounts. Chupke Chupke is simply lovable and is one film that demands repeat viewings. It is a true classic comedy and one that makes sure you will have a smile on your face from the beginning to the very end.
