Manchali is a mid-seventies moderate hit film directed and produced by Raja Nawathe starring Sanjeev Kumar, Leena Chandavarkar, Nazima and Nirupa Roy.The story is about a rich spoiled girl who does not want to get married and hires a husband. There are shades of Taming of the Shrew in how the hero woos the girl. This theme is repeated in the 1981 Hindi film Naukar Biwi Ka.The title track from this film was very catchy and popular.

Manchali is that story you never actually read but know by heart.A rogue and spoilt girl from a rich family hires a husband who apparently is from a poor family for reason as obscure as ‘her chacha is not exactly keeping well and she must get married’ in order to inherit all his wealth. Then she sleeps on the King sized bed with almost as much pillow material as needed to cover her flesh and makes the poor-guy-on-hire sleep on balcony. As it always happens when poor guys sleep on balcony he became St Augustus.
Surprizingly he used to know twist and charmed the friends of his ‘wife’ very quickly. This type of movie used to had (have) a stock scene where the poor-guy-on-hire will slap the rich-girl-gone-spoilt in front of everyone. That single slap will change the girl forever. The taming of the shrew continues as she devises a plan to send him off which goes awry and ends in him being injured. She feels very bad about it and begins to realize that she has feelings for him.
Meanwhile, her aunt and uncle are planning a party to celebrate their marriage, and her uncle is ready to hand over her inheritance. When her uncle tells them that he has put her property in both hers and Susheel’s names though, her suspicions are aroused again. When Susheel then disappears with all her papers (including the divorce) and jewelry and fails to turn up in time for the party, her anger and her family’s anxiety know no bounds.
Where has he gone? Has she been thoroughly deceived?
