Bawarchi (1972)

Bawarchi is a light-hearted film directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee starring Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Badhuri with Asrani, A.K. Hangal and Durga Khote in supporting roles.In Mukherjee’s classic style, the film contains no violence or obscenities, and focuses on spreading family values and morals through clean comedy.It is a remake of classic Bangla movie “Golpo Holeo Sotti” directed by Tapan Sinha.

The story is centered around the squabbling Sharma family, headed by their eccentric Daduji Harindranath Chattopadhyay, which has a dubious reputation the inability to retain a cook for more than a few months due to their ill treatment of their servants. The family’s disrepute spreads to such an extent that no person wants to be employed as a cook in their home, ironically named Shanti Nivas (abode of peace).

Then one day a young man named Raghu (Rajesh Khanna) offers to work as a cook, and he is hired. Raghu quickly understands the family members’ preferences and works to restore peace to Shanti Nivas, and soon the squabbles and arguments come to an end.

And then, one day, the Sharmas find the family jewels and Raghu missing. Actually he was planning a union between the young lady member of the family with a suitable boy. He stole the jewels to give it to the boy who could then restore them to the family. It helped to increase the boy’s stature in the family.

Actually Raghu was a professor by profession. He had learnt dance, music and cooking. He gave up his profession after seeing so many families in despair and not living in peace. He made his motto of life to work in these kinds of families and teach them the value of small moments of happiness and love and thus making peace again.

In the end it is shown that he is on his way to find some another family and fix it.
