Bachchan (2013)

What starts as an action movie, takes you through a journey of sentimental, romantic sequences with plenty of turns and twists, especially in the second half. Full marks should be given to Shashank for handling the sequences brilliantly; and for the excellent script and narration.

The movie portrays Sudeep in three shades. In the first shade, our hero Bharat alias Bachchan (Sudeep) plays the good Samaritan as a real estate manager and curbs people from getting cheated by land sharks. We also have Anjali (Parul), his neighbour, working as a personal secretary. The hero in the second half has some romantic moments with Monica ( Tulip Joshi), who comes from abroad. His closeness to Monica makes Anjali upset. Not because she is in love with him, but her sister Anjali and Bharat are in love.

The third shade has Sudeep in an action mode with impressive stunts by Ravivarma. Bharat kills Dr Srinivasa Iyengar (Nasser), police inspector Mahesh Deshpande and a minister. Why did he kill them? There is an interesting story behind all this, which eventually brings to the fore the mining mafia. The story takes a curious turn when we come to know that Sudeep suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.

Sudeep has done a commendable job as Bharath. Parul impresses you with her excellent dialogue delivery and expression. Ravishankar is amazing as a villain. Music by V Harikrishna has some catchy tunes.Cinematography by Shekhar Chandra is impressive. All credit to Imran Sardaria for his choreography.

The director has chosen a simple revenge drama, but he has included interesting twists and turns, which make you watch it sitting on the edge of the seat. Shashank has also made brief references to the current political developments, the issue of alleged mining in Bellary and its adverse effects on common man. His characterisation is good in the film. But it should be said here that his climax looks weak when compared to the way he runs the whole show, which gives you an impression of a suspense thriller in parts.

Bachchan is high octane action entertainer with all the commercial elements to impress the mass. Sudeep’s performance is the main highlight in the film. Shashank’s racy and interesting narration, Harikrishna’s music, Shekar Chandru’s picturisation, wonderfully choreographed fights, chase and dance sequences, Bullet Prakash’s comedy and funny one-liners, beautiful costumes and art direction are its other attractions. Its predictable climax can be called as its one main drawback.
